Founder of EMPWR Transformative Therapy

I’ve always had a natural curiosity about the world around me, observing dynamics in an attempt to make things better. I recall trying to understand why bullies in my fourth-grade class would target specific individuals. I was curious about what might have happened to these bullies that would influence them to behave in such ways. I had a burning desire to know why people felt and behaved in the ways that they did, including myself.

I struggled immensely as a child but my straight A’s and good behavior in school (thanks to the perfectionistic part of me) masked my emotional struggles. At home, there was no talking about emotions so I kept them to myself as I became consumed by anxiety, OCD, and depression.

  • I hit rock bottom after experiencing a traumatic death in my family and struggled with, what I know now to have been post-traumatic stress disorder.  Still, it didn’t make sense to me why I was struggling as much as I was, given that I considered my childhood to be a positive experience. Since I had no clue if my emotions and experiences were valid and had no emotional support, I felt like something was wrong with me, and I was determined to get to the bottom of it.

I understand the importance of mental health, which is why I see my therapist every week, but at one point, I struggled to find one that felt like the right fit. I could sense the fatigue and burnout in my therapists. We never seemed to uncover the why of my symptoms. Sessions were focused on getting rid of these symptoms using stereotypical solutions. Anxious? Do some deep breathing. Depressed? Go for a walk outside. Struggling in relationships? Allow yourself to be vulnerable (Hah! Because that’s how it works).

Although I did want relief, and badly, I wanted to get to the root of my issues so I wasn’t constantly trying to rid myself of unwanted thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I wanted something deeper and more permanent.

Early in my adulthood, I found the therapist I had been looking for all along. This therapeutic experience felt so different from all the others. I felt safe deeply exploring my past in a way I had never done before. I experienced an indescribable feeling of clarity and peace for the first time in my life. It all made sense to me – my struggles, my maladaptive coping mechanisms. I felt heard and understood, even though my therapist couldn’t personally relate to what I was going through.

There was no mention of deep breathing or taking walks, yet I found the most relief throughout our work together. I didn’t understand how this was working, but I was just happy that it was working. You can imagine my devastation when my graduate school obligations interfered with my appointments and I had to find a different therapist that could accommodate my schedule.

Not long after completing my graduate program, I was asked to participate in the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Children’s Trauma Initiative, in which I was trained and nationally certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). TF-CBT is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma and their caregivers. As I began using this modality, how I viewed the struggles of my adult clients changed drastically.

I was amazed at how often presenting problems in adults could be attributed to distressing experiences during childhood. I wanted to do more for my adult clients so I sought training and certification in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.

Years later, I joined a group practice that, unbeknownst to me, was well-versed in Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. As I began learning about this modality, I realized that this was the therapy that was life-changing for me many years prior. I knew I had to get trained in it to help women feel validated and empowered to heal from painful experiences as I had done. I completed my IFS Level 1 training in April 2022 and am a practicing IFS therapist. Talk about full circle!

Why I Do What I Do

I understand how impactful early experiences can be and I feel called to help women heal from experiences that left them questioning their worth.

It was always my dream to build a practice that provides the quality of care I wish I had received when I needed it the most. As I was preparing to open my practice, I reflected on my early experiences as an overworked, underpaid, and burnt-out therapist and how this affected my quality of work. I thought back to my experience as a client and how I could sense fatigue and indifference in my providers and how terrible that felt for me. I knew I wanted my clients to have a much different experience than I did.

Although my clinical focus is women, I believe all people deserve to live fulfilling lives and that they naturally have the internal resources to do so. Women deserve to be heard and understood. Quality care should be accessible to all women who want to dig deeper and heal. When we can understand and harmonize our own minds, we can do the same for larger human systems and help the world become a more compassionate place.

My Background & Experience

  • Experience

I began practicing counseling in 2017. I earned my Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Central Michigan University and my Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Michigan State University. Go Green!

  • Professional Experience

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified EMDR Therapist, Certified TF-CBT Therapist, and an IFS Level 1 Therapist. I began my career at a non-profit and later joined a group practice. I opened EMPWR Transformative Therapy in January 2022 and I’m loving the private practice journey!

  • Just for Fun

When I’m not empowering women to live more fulfilling lives, I enjoy boxing, painting, making flower arrangements, annoying my two dogs, playing the ukulele, and listening to The Office on repeat while I work on interior design projects.

Why Work With Me

I care deeply about providing the best possible experience for each one of my clients and take a limited number of clients. I take my mental health and professional development very seriously and value work/life balance to ensure I remain passionate about my work and fully committed to providing the best possible care. This allows my clients to achieve their goals more quickly than working with therapists that are overworked and burnt out.

I believe in being authentic and genuine. My clients have said that my down-to-earth personality and sense of humor puts them at ease despite talking about difficult subjects. They appreciate my curious approach and feel free of bias and judgment.

I’ve worked very hard to break the stereotype of therapy within my work.  Gone are the days of nodding and repeatedly asking “And how does that make you feel?”  Can we get an Amen?!

I understand how big of an investment therapy is…emotionally and financially.  I’ve streamlined my intake paperwork process so that our first session doesn’t feel like a stressful interview, but a relaxed, casual conversation.  I like getting down to business so you can feel relief quickly.

I provide online therapy for your convenience so that you don’t have to worry about barriers that are typical of in-office sessions–long, stressful commutes to your therapist’s office, arranging childcare, sicknesses,  inclement weather, missing work.  We’re working to improve your life, not add more stress!
