Life is hectic. Work deadlines, traffic, school drop off and pick-up, dinner, laundry…the list never ends. When you think of attending therapy once a week, what comes to mind? Do you feel like there isn’t enough time in the day? Do you feel overwhelmed by the thought of adding another obligation to your already busy day? Online therapy is ideal for busy professionals, stay-at-home parents and caregivers, new moms with infants at home, homebound clients with disabilities, and college students who board all over the country.

A Part of EMPWR’s History…

March 2020 was a time of chaos and fear for many. The COVID-19 pandemic swept across the United States and forever changed the delivery of mental health services.

Before the pandemic, April Mendyka, Founder of EMPWR Transformative Therapy, had no experience with online therapy, not as a professional nor a consumer. She was working at both a non-profit and a group practice at the time, and meeting the needs of her clients through a computer screen didn’t seem feasible or desirable. Some clients felt the same way and looked forward to the day they could return to the office. Others loved it because of how accessible sessions were.

April discussed with her clients their likes and dislikes of online therapy and tried to make adjustments to better meet the needs of each client. As months passed by and the pandemic continued to put life on pause, she began to see a shift in herself and her clients; they embraced this change as online therapy became more of a permanent idea.

  • April has been exclusively holding online therapy sessions since then and she hasn’t looked back. She didn’t think genuine therapeutic relationships were possible through a computer screen, but she’s found quite the opposite and feels more connected to her clients than ever.

It was because of the pandemic that a virtual Level 1 Internal Family Systems (IFS) training was offered and April was able to attend in 2020. This model allows April to deeply connect with her clients. She no longer sees a computer screen as a barrier, but as a catalyst for connection.

Online therapy made care much more accessible because location was no longer a barrier for people. April was able to help women all across Michigan and she became passionate about making quality care accessible during such trying times.

April had so much success helping her clients throughout 2020 that she decided to launch EMPWR Transformative Therapy as an exclusively online counseling practice.

What started as a daunting challenge led to an incredible victory in supporting women all across the state of Michigan, which would not have been possible without online therapy.

Online therapy can help to uncover the underlying causes of your worries and fears, learn how to relax, look at situations in a new, less frightening way, and develop better coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills.

April is grateful to be trained in therapies that can be just as effective virtually. Of those is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, which relieves distress, reformulates negative beliefs, and reduces physiological arousal. She is also trained in Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy to help you heal from the past, find calm in the present, and navigate the future with peace and clarity.

Questions or concerns about online therapy?

  • We can appreciate your desire for in-person sessions, and we invite you to be curious about this preference.

We, too, had our reservations at the beginning of COVID when we held telehealth sessions for the first time. We didn’t take the decision lightly to launch as an online-exclusive therapy practice when the time came.

If you feel like we’d be a perfect fit otherwise, we encourage you to try it out for a few sessions. Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy allows for a much deeper connection than traditional talk therapy. Our clients have expressed relief in finding a deep connection throughout their telehealth sessions when they didn’t think it was possible. You may just be surprised yourself!

  • There are several reasons why we do not accept insurance as an in-network provider. One of the reasons is that it significantly reduces your privacy and confidentiality. Insurance companies require a psychiatric diagnosis that goes on your medical health record and can negatively impact you in many ways.

We want you to be an informed consumer and have the opportunity to remain in control of your care without the restrictions of insurance. However, if you aren’t concerned about a diagnosis on your permanent medical record and your insurance plan has out-of-network benefits, we can provide documentation for you to submit to insurance for possible reimbursement. You can also visit our Rates & Fees page for a list of helpful questions to ask your insurance provider to learn more about your benefits, along with other methods of paying for services. Please let us know during your initial consultation if you want to use insurance.
